The UV Reactor

The UV (ultraviolet) reactor, also known as an ultraviolet disinfector or ultraviolet sterilizer, is a crucial component in water treatment for eliminating harmful microorganisms. It uses ultraviolet (UV) light to disinfect water in an effective and environmentally friendly way. At Magnor, our UV reactor systems are custom-designed and mounted on steel panels or bases for integration into the complete water treatment chain.

How the UV reactor works

A UV reactor usually operates in four distinct stages:

  1. Reaction chamber: Water flows through a stainless-steel reaction chamber.
  2. UV lamp: A UV lamp inside a quartz sleeve emits short-wave UV rays at typically 253.7 nanometers.
  3. Micro-organism inactivation: UV rays penetrate the cells of micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses and protozoa, damaging their DNA and making them inactive.
  4. Disinfected water outlet: Water free of harmful micro-organisms then flows out of the reaction chamber.

Why use a UV reactor?

The advantages of adding a UV reactor to the water treatment chain are numerous, including:

  • Chemical-free treatment: Unlike chlorine disinfection, UV systems add no chemicals to the water, preserving its natural taste and odor.
  • Effective disinfection: UV systems effectively eliminate a wide range of micro-organisms, including some that are resistant to chlorine.
  • Safety: UV disinfection is a safe and environmentally friendly method of water treatment.
  • Low maintenance: UV systems require minimal maintenance and offer a long service life.

What are the applications of a UV reactor?

Drinking water

Municipalities, communities, workers' camps and recreation and tourism centers use this type of system to meet health and aesthetic standards in accordance with current provincial regulations and Health Canada.

Process water

In the industrial sector, UV reactors are used to eliminate micro-organisms harmful to the industrial process used.

For example: In the food industry, the UV reactor is often used in the water treatment chain used in food and beverage production.
